Workshop on RTI Held and Network Formed

Continuing its bid to raise awareness about right to information among civil society members and rights activists and to assist the process of implementation of Right to Information Act 2007 Citizen's Campaign for Right to Information (CCRI) organized a one day training workshop in the eastern part of Nepal, Rajbiraj, Saptari on 13 January 2011.

 

In a program participated by more than 35 civil society representatives including journalists, lawyers, human rights activists, forest users' group, Local Peace Committee, consumer groups, executive members of CCRI Mr. Santosh Sigdel and Mr. Nayan Bahadur Khadka facilitated the sessions. The training has covered different topics including history and development of right to information, international legal provisions on right to information, national legal provisions on right to information, process of demanding information, process of appeal and limitation on right to information. Participants also took part in a practical exercise session in the last part of the program.

 

In the program participants shared their experience accessing information and highlighted the problems associated with the process. According to some of the participants, there is a widely held misconception among the citizens that the right to information is for journalists to get information on time. Another problem they highlighted is the lack of appointment of Information Officers in public agencies, the very first step for the implementation of the right to information law.

 

In a very positive development, participants in the program realized the need of coordinated effort for the implementation of right to information law in local level. Participants formed a 9 member 'Civil Society Network for the Implementation of Right to Information Law'. The members of the Network are Mr. Murali Prasad Yadav (Coordinator), Mr. Shivahari Prasad Bhattarai, Mr. Thanshing Bhandari, Ms. Ambika Dahal, Mr. Rajkumar Gupta, Ms. Babita Karki, Durgananda Swarnikar, Mr. Dinesh Yadav, Mr. Bhogendra Yadab. The committee expressed its commitment to work for the promotion of right to information in the district. Similarly, it has decided to meet chief of every district level public agency and create environment for the appointment of information officer as soon as possible.
