Human Rights Day Celebrated

Citizens' Campaign for Right to Information (CCRI) participated in a rally organized on December 10, 2010 to mark the 62nd International Human Rights Day. Rally was a joint effort of National Human Rights Commission and more than 100 NGOs working in Human Rights. Speak Up Stop Discrimination is the theme for this year.

 

The theme emphasizes on the individual's right to freedom of expression as an important factor to end discrimination. Freedom of information is an integral part of freedom of expression which has important role for enjoyment of all human rights. UN General Assembly resolution 59(i) also states "freedom of information is fundamental human right and is the touchstone of all the freedoms".

 

As December 10 is globally marked by organizing various programs and events, a rally was organized in Kathmandu and different parts of the country. The Rally in Kathmandu commenced by welcoming all NGO representatives and government organizations and started from Basantapur Durbar Square, local hub of Kathmandu at 9 am. Rally ended at 'Santi Batika', Peace Garden located at Ratna Park, another busiest hub of Kathmandu.

 

At the end of rally, various NGO representatives spoke on the importance of marking International Human Rights Day and highlighted upon contemporary issues of Nepal. Concerns on new Constitution and to end impunity were major agendas of speakers.
