Interface meeting with policy makers for better RTI implementation

Kathmandu 15 March: Freedom Forum organized a daylong interface meeting with parliamentarians and policy makers to take stock the issues and problems during the implementation of RTI laws in Nepal. The main objective of the programme as part of SANCHAR project was to pile pressure on policy-makers and shapers for necessary changes and reforms in RTI laws and institutions and collect feedback for effective implementation of the government mechanisms for good governance. Mr. Taranath Dahal, chairperson of Freedom Forum highlighted the objectives and the RTI campaign at the program. Mr. Tanka Aryal, Executive Director of Citizens' Campaign for Right to Information (CCRI) made it clear about the problems facing by the RTI activists while using RTI. Parliamentarians Mr. Ram Hari Khatiwada from Nepali Congress, Dr. Kumar Khadka from Akhanda Nepal Party, Dr. Subodh Kumar Pokhrel from Tarai Madhes Lokatantrik Party, Engineer Sakaldev Sutihar from Nepal Congress and Ms. Dhanmaya BK from United CPN Maoist aired their views on the occasion. Similarly, Purushottam Tiwari from Ministry of Information and Communications, Devi Prasad Thapaliya from Office of Prime Minister and Council of Ministers had participated from the level of policy makers. Similarly, Mr. Shree Ram Pant and Khadgaraj Rai were participated from National Information Commission. Sher Bahadur Dhungana, president of Society of Information Officers Nepal, Dharmendra Jha from Freedom Forum, Anita Sigdel from RTI Center and Nodanath Trital from Freedom Forum and Sharada Bhusal Jha from Sushasan Abhiyan Nepal also presented the experiences during the practice of RTI law. All parliamentarians and policy makers had made their commitments for effective implementation of RTI laws. There were altogether 27 participants including journalists and civil society organizations' representatives.
